10 photos showing the uncanny valley

The "uncanny valley" is a term created by Masahiro Mori to illustrate the feeling of discomfort or creepiness that people have when seeing robots or CGI that closely resembles real humans. The valley referred to is not a geographic place but rather a region on a graph that depicts the point where negative emotional response is exhibited towards robots or animation that seem "almost human". Here are 10 examples from the uncanny valley, none of which are real people (except for the man on the right in the first picture). They're kinda creepy, huh?

  1. If you'd like to see some more uncanniness, I've been compiling a gallery of these as part of my PhD research: http://pics.livejournal.com/uncanny_valley/gallery/00006fyh
